What happens during the first session?
The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and to explore what has brought you to therapy at this point in your life.
You do not need to prepare anything perfectly or know exactly what to say. Some people arrive with a very clear sense of what they want help with, while others simply know that something does not feel right or feels difficult to carry alone.
We will also talk about practicalities such as confidentiality, how I work, and whether working together feels like a good fit for both of us.
What if I don’t know what I need?
That is completely okay.
Many people come to therapy feeling confused, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected from themselves, or unsure why they are struggling in the way they are. Part of the therapeutic process can be gently making sense of these experiences together.
You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out.
What if I find it difficult to talk?
Many people do – especially if they are used to coping alone, minimising their feelings, or feeling unheard in relationships.
There is no pressure to share more than feels manageable. Therapy can move at a pace that feels manageable and safe for you.
Do I have to talk about the past?
Not unless you want to.
Some clients come wanting to focus mainly on present-day difficulties, while others find it helpful to explore how earlier experiences may still be affecting them now. Often, therapy naturally moves between the present and the past in a way that feels meaningful and manageable.
What if I’m in crisis or feeling overwhelmed?
Therapy can offer support during emotionally difficult periods, but it may not always be the safest or most appropriate form of immediate crisis support.
If you are in the UK and need immediate support, you can contact NHS 111, your GP, Samaritans on 116 123, or emergency services.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number of sessions. Some people come for a short period focused around a specific difficulty, while others choose longer-term therapy to explore deeper or longstanding patterns.
How long we work together will depend on many factors, including what brings you to therapy, the level of support you are looking for, your personal circumstances, and what feels right for you.
You are always free to decide when you would like to end therapy. I will not pressure you to continue longer than feels helpful, and I will also aim to offer consistency and care throughout our work together.
How much does a session cost?
Sessions are 50 minutes long and cost £50.
Payment can be made by bank transfer or cash, and is due on the day of the session.
If you choose online counselling, I will provide payment details before our first session.

Is counselling confidential?
Yes. Counselling is confidential, and what we discuss will stay between us.
There are a small number of legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality, usually relating to serious risk of harm or safeguarding concerns. I will explain these clearly during our first session so that you know what to expect.
How often will we meet?
Most clients choose to attend weekly sessions, especially at the beginning of therapy, as this helps create consistency and continuity in the work.
However, we can also think together about what feels manageable and appropriate for your circumstances, needs, and finances.
Reaching out for therapy can feel vulnerable, especially if you are used to coping alone or questioning whether your struggles are “serious enough”.
You are welcome to get in touch whether you already know what you would like support with, or whether things simply feel difficult, overwhelming, or hard to make sense of right now.
